Manchester United came up against Sean Dyche’s struggling Burnley side in the Premier League this afternoon at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled against Burnley in recent years with the Clarets unbeaten in their last four Premier League visits to Old Trafford.

But the Red Devils earned a hard fought three points with a 3-1 victory over Burnley to all but secure a top-four finish and qualification for next seasons Champions League. The increasingly influential Mason Greenwood scored twice with Edinson Cavani coming off the bench to clinch all three points and all but secure second position in the Premier League.

The player in focus for this afternoon’s fixture is Mason Greenwood, who started at centre forward in the absence of Cavani, who was rested after starting two consecutive matches.

The exciting 19-year old has struggled in his second season after his impressive debut campaign where he scored 17 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions. Greenwood has shown glimpses of a return to form recently and his two goals today against Burnley means he has scored in three consecutive Premier League games for the first time this season.

The England international showed some glimpses of threatening against Burnley in the first half with both sides finding it difficult to create any meaningful chances.

The impressive Marcus Rashford produced a moment of magic on the left wing, beating Burnley right back Matthew Lowton before delivering an excellent cross into the six-yard box, which was finished sublimely by Greenwood after an intelligent dummy from Bruno Fernandes to give United the lead.

Burnley got back into the game two minutes later with James Tarkowski scoring a towering header past the helpless Dean Henderson to make it 1-1.

Solskjaer’s side created a few chances but the Clarets remained resolute with Burnley reserve goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell producing a number of excellent saves to keep it at 1-1. Greenwood came up trumps in the 84th minute when he cut in from the right flank and his deflected shot flew in past Peacock-Farrell to give the Red Devils a vital home win.

Despite a difficult second season, Greenwood has come into form at a key stage of the season for United as they aim to secure second position in the Premier League and challenge for the Europa League.

Greenwood has now scored 9 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils and if he can keep up this form until the end of the season, he could be selected by Gareth Southgate for England’s postponed 2020 European Championships squad.
