Kyle Walker opened himself and his club up to ridicule with a barbed tweet aimed at Manchester City’s title rivals Liverpool on Thursday.

After City suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Tuesday evening, Liverpool had the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points when Leicester visited Anfield the following night.

But the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw thanks to a goal from Harry Maguire, giving Pep Guardiola’s side an unexpected lifeline in the hunt for England’s top flight crown.

And the following day, City full-back Walker poked fun at Jürgen Klopp’s men when he tweeted the famous picture of England defender Maguire talking to his girlfriend which became a meme during last summer’s World Cup along with the caption: “So basically they thought they were gonna go 7 points ahead …”

The controversial tweet was met with instantaneous backlash from City and Liverpool supporters alike and was swiftly deleted, but not before we grabbed a screenshot.

Walker’s jibe could well come back to bite him on the arse in the not-too-distant future, and his manager probably won’t be too happy when he finds out about it.
