The stance taken by Manchester City amid ongoing transfer reports surrounding Ederson and Gianluigi Donnarumma has now been revealed.

City’s goalkeeping situation has been a persistent talking point this summer, with speculation intensifying over a potential changing of the guard at the Etihad Stadium.

Reports in France and Italy have repeatedly linked the Premier League giants with PSG’s Donnarumma, while Ederson has been the subject of interest from Galatasaray. However, new information suggests City’s actual stance is far more cautious than headlines might suggest.

The club’s hierarchy has already overseen a significant reshuffle in the goalkeeping department, with James Trafford returning from Burnley in a British-record deal for a goalkeeper worth £31 million, while Stefan Ortega’s future remains uncertain.

Ederson’s status as Pep Guardiola’s first choice remains firm for now. The Brazilian has been a cornerstone of City’s success under the Catalan coach, playing a pivotal role in multiple Premier League titles, Champions League glory, and domestic cup triumphs.

And now, according to the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, while Manchester City have not denied interest in PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, their preference is to keep Ederson.

It is further detailed that manager Pep Guardiola also expects to keep Ederson for the forthcoming season, while James Trafford was re-signed earlier this summer with the ambition of taking over when the Brazilian’s contract is up in 2026.

Additional reporting from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan states that Manchester City have insisted that they have had no contact from any club about signing Ederson, and want to keep the player amid links to Galatasaray.

If City maintain their current course, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s name may remain on their radar without any immediate action being taken. The Italian’s availability could still become a factor in future windows, particularly if Ederson’s situation changes or PSG adjust valuation.

For now, though, Pep Guardiola’s side look set to begin the 2025/26 season with stability in goal – a combination of Ederson’s proven quality, James Trafford’s developmental trajectory, and Marcus Bettinelli’s position as third-choice.
