Manchester City’s dynamic midfielder Matheus Nunes showed he can be a key contributor to City’s treble defence. The Portuguese international put in a sparkling display during Pep Guardiola’s side’s 3-1 win over Burnley overnight.

Matheus Nunes was named to start in midfield alongside Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne to start last night’s game. By the final whistle, he had shown the attributes that will make him a valuable piece of the second half of the season. He also picked up an assist to set up his team’s opener in the first half. It was the run of Nunes that created the opening. The midfielder made a driving run to get onto the end of Phil Foden’s pass. After his initial cross was blocked Nunes stuck at it and on the second attempt he played a delightful ball for Julian Alvarez to head home. It was this passage of play that showed what the dynamic midfielder could add to the treble-winner’s weaponry.

Matheus Nunes and his drive from midfield is a standout attribute of the Portuguese midfielder. He is also one of the few City midfielders with this ability. While Kevin De Bruyne has a similar trait he is a different type of player to Nunes. De Bruyne’s strengths are well known but paired with Nunes the pair created havoc against Vincent Kompany’s side. The directness and drive of Nunes were a constant threat to Burnley and the midfielder finally had the opportunity to show what he can add to City’s treble defence.

It was arguably the dynamic midfielder’s best performance of the season. He put in a great performance against Urawa Red Diamonds at the the FIFA Club World Cup but last night showed what he can provide during the second half of the season.
