Manchester City’s defence puts in their best display of the season against Spurs

Manchester City’s defence put in their best display of the season during the FA Cup holders 1-nil win over Tottenham. It was a welcome return to form for the City backline. They resembled the defence of a season ago that helped lay the foundation for the treble last campaign.

Coming up against Ange Postecoglu’s Tottenham side it was expected to be an open game between two sides who play attractive football. The two sides played out an enthralling 3-all draw at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season. But last night Pep Guardiola’s side was determined to dominate proceedings. With Bernardo Silva dropping deeper into midfield to provide support for Rodri and Mateo Kovacic on form Pep Guardiola’s side dominated proceedings.

But another performance was also key for the European champions. The back four of Manchester City put in their best collective display of the season to successfully neutralize Tottenham’s attack. Ange Postecoglu’s are known for their expansive play and attractive football but it was non-existent during last night’s game. The FA Cup holders held Spurs to only one shot on target for the entire match which was a testament to the defence.

The back four of Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol were outstanding at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They were all rarely beaten on the night. The defensive errors that had been a constant theme this season to date were nowhere to be seen in a dominant defensive display.

Last night’s defensive performance could set the tone for the rest of the season. It should be the benchmark for City’s defence as they seek to defend the treble.
