The Sky Blues took the lead after just a quarter of an hour, when Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw slotted home after some poor defending from the visitors, extending her lead at the top of the Women’s Super League goalscoring charts and making it seem as though City could run away with the game.

Midtable Everton couldn’t lay a glove on City in the first half, failing to even register a shot on target and having just 30% possession.

Though it was a more even start to the second half, Lauren Hemp doubled Manchester City’s lead. But Hanna Bennison pulled one back for the Toffees with a stunning strike from 25 yards on the hour mark as the visitors grew into the game.

City continued to dominate the ball and racked up the attempts, but a resolute Everton defence kept the deficit to just one as the nerves grew for the hosts into the final minutes.

There was to be no sting in the tail though, with Bennison’s goal proving the last shot on target for the visitors, and the league leaders continued their impressive march towards Super League success, opening up a three point lead over Chelsea ahead of the London side’s clash with Leicester City on Sunday.
