Officials at Manchester City have already turned their attentions towards a new contractual task after finding a breakthrough in their Pep Guardiola conversations.

It has been widely reported, as first revealed by The Athletic, that the Premier League champions have now been informed by Pep Guardiola of his decision to remain as Etihad Stadium head coach.

As such, the 53-year-old will extend his stay in contract through to the end of the 2025/26 campaign, at which point he will have the option to further extend his contract as Manchester City coach by a further 12 months.

The decision from the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich tactician means that he will take his reign as Manchester City head coach to a decade, having already established himself as by far and away the club’s most successful manager.

And while the future of Pep Guardiola was no doubt Manchester City’s main goal to rectify as soon as possible, they have wasted no time in turning their attentions away and towards a new focus in the coming weeks and months.

That is according to the information of The Sun’s Martin Blackburn, who reports that Manchester City will now step up their efforts to convince star striker Erling Haaland to follow Guardiola in signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

It is explained that any contract extension for the Norwegian would see him remain at Manchester City for four or five more years, and also see the 24-year-old pocket around £100 million in wages before any bonuses in his contract.

Erling Haaland is continuously building upon his reputation as a future Manchester City legend, with a goalscoring trend that would make him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer should he remain at the club for long enough.

Speaking during the summer months, Pep Guardiola tipped the former Borussia Dortmund frontman to become a future City captain, as he explained, “If he stays longer, he will be one of the captains, that is normal.”

Guardiola continued during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, “The impact since he arrived is really, really good. Always happy, and positive, and incredible, incredible.”

Erling Haaland and Manchester City will be hoping to return to winning ways on Saturday evening, as they take on Tottenham in the Premier League fresh off the back of the final international break of 2024, and an opportunity to get their star players rested and fit.
