Manchester City will play their first Premier League fixture of the 25/26 season at the Etihad Stadium today when they host Tottenham. Today’s match looms as the first serious test for Pep Guardiola’s side this season. Thomas Frank’s Brentford teams have typically troubled City in seasons past. It would be expected that Frank’s tactics for today’s match will be similar to what he has utilised when he was Brentford’s manager. It will be up to a new-look City side to break down Spurs at home. The scene does appear set for a cracking game at the Etihad.
Here is the latest Manchester City team news and my predicted City starting eleven for today’s match.
There was a host of team news to come out of Pep Guardiola’s pre-game press conference yesterday. Mateo Kovacic, Savinho, Marcus Bettinelli and Josko Gvardiol are out of today’s match. Josko Gvardiol has returned to training this week, but today’s match has come too soon for the Croatian international.
Phil Foden, Rodri and Ederson are available to play in today’s match. Pep Guardiola confirmed that Ederson is over the illness that kept him out of Manchester City’s 4-nil win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. Foden and Rodri travelled with the City squad last weekend but weren’t included in Manchester City’s matchday squad. The pair should be on the bench for today’s match.
James Trafford- It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ederson start today, but in my opinion, James Trafford deserves to start. Trafford was excellent against Wolves and deserves to keep his place.
Rico Lewis- Lewis was superb against Wolves, and I expect him to start at right-back.
Ruben Dias- Fresh off signing a contract extension, Dias will be eager to lead by example against Tottenham.
John Stones- I cannot see a change being made at the back by Pep Guardiola, and that should see Stones keep his place.
Rayan Ait-Nouri- The Algerian international did well against his old side at Molineux. A bigger test awaits Ait-Nouri in a game where he should make his home debut for Manchester City.
Nico- There is no reason for Nico not to start against Tottenham.
Bernardo Silva- It is a big day for Manchester City’s captain. Bernardo will be eager to lead from the front in front of the Manchester City fans today.
Tijjani Reijnders- An automatic selection in City’s midfield. The Dutch international will look to build on his man-of-the-match performance last weekend.
Oscar Bobb- It is almost impossible for Bobb to be dropped for today’s match. I expect him to start on the right wing.
Omar Marmoush- I’m only expecting one change from Manchester City’s starting lineup from last weekend. Marmoush should come in for Doku is what I’m expecting to occur.
Erling Haaland- Haaland scored a brace against Wolves he could be a pivotal player in today’s match.
