Manchester City vs Tottenham: Latest City team news and predicted City starting eleven

Article image:Manchester City vs Tottenham: Latest City team news and predicted City starting eleven

Following the international break Manchester City return to Premier League action today. Pep Guardiola’s side take on Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium in what promises to be an entertaining affair. The world champions have lost their past four games in all competitions. They will be eager to arrest that slide today but Ange Postecoglou’s side will be no easy beats. Although they are inconsistent there is quality in their ranks.

Today’s match will also see Rodri return home with the Ballon d’Or he won last month. It will be a special moment when City’s midfield general is presented to the Manchester City fans before kickoff.

Here is the latest City team news and predicted Manchester City starting eleven ahead of today’s crucial match at the Etihad.

Latest City team news

Manchester City entered the international break amid an injury crisis. Pep Guardiola told the media yesterday that several players are returning from injury for today’s match. Although the champions suffered a fresh injury blow as per Pep Guardiola’s update yesterday.

Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and John Stones are all available for today’s match as per Guardiola’s update yesterday. That is welcome news for the world champions.

Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish trained earlier this week and are both available for today’s match.

Mateo Kovacic is facing up to a month on the sidelines. The Croatian international picked up an injury on international duty in a massive blow for Manchester City.

There has been no further update provided by Pep Guardiola on the status of Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku. Their availability will be known when the team lineups are announced before today’s match.

Predicted Manchester City starting lineup

Ederson- I can’t see any reason why Ederson won’t start today’s match. His passing ability could be a key feature for Manchester City today.

Kyle Walker- The time is now for Walker to return to his best. He got minutes in for England over the international break which should help City’s captain get back into form.

John Stones- The England international is back fit and should start today. His experience will be required as may his ability to drop into midfield with Kovacic ruled out due to injury.

Manuel Akanji- I expect Akanji to partner Stones in City’s defence today. Hopefully, Akanji is over his fitness issues and can quickly return to his best.

Josko Gvardiol- The Croatian international has been an automatic selection for Pep Guardiola at left-back this season. I can’t see that changing today.

Rico Lewis- With Mateo Kovacic out I expect Rico Lewis to start in midfield. He has always appeared destined to play in midfield and that could begin today.

Matheus Nunes- Nunes has shone on the left wing during City’s recent games but I feel he could start in midfield today. His pace and all-around ability may be key to City’s chances of winning the midfield battle today. If he doesn’t start there and De Bruyne starts I expect Nunes to play on the left wing.

Bernardo Silva- An automatic selection for Pep Guardiola. He will have a crucial role to play today whether it’s on a wing or in midfield.

Kevin De Bruyne- De Bruyne has been working his way back to full fitness and did feature in City’s past two games. The time may be now for De Bruyne to return to the starting lineup as the world champions have missed their inspirational midfielder.

Phil Foden- Foden has had a much-needed rest over the international break. If he is at full fitness I expect him to start today.

Erling Haaland- City’s number 9 was in sparkling form for Norway. The hope is he can carry that form into today’s match. If he does up against Tottenham’s depleted defence he could inspire his team to a much-needed victory.
