According to UOL, Manchester City are weighing up a move for Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães, as the Premier League champions prepare for life after Kevin De Bruyne. With the Belgian maestro confirmed to leave this summer, the club’s recruitment team is reportedly narrowing its focus on midfield reinforcements — and the Brazilian international is firmly in their sights.

Bruno, 27, has been pivotal for Newcastle since arriving in June 2022. His influence has grown to iconic status, particularly after helping the Magpies to their first major trophy in 70 years with victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. As UOL reports, “Bruno Guimarães led Newcastle to make history by winning the EFL Cup against Liverpool.”

His release clause — set at £100 million — is considered steep by City, but Guardiola is said to be a firm admirer. “The midfielder is liked by coach Pep Guardiola, who appreciates the Brazilian’s profile on the pitch.”At this stage, no formal negotiations have been opened, but internal discussions are underway.
Should the move progress, it would mark another significant reshaping of City’s midfield — one shaped as much by continuity of quality as by tactical flexibility.
As ever with Manchester City, the link to Bruno Guimarães sparks admiration and wariness in equal measure. Bruno is an exceptional footballer — that’s beyond dispute. But for a reported £100 million, some fans will ask whether City are paying for substance or status.
There’s also the question of fit. Bruno excels in a more free-spirited role at Newcastle, often dictating tempo and driving forward transitions. At City, he’d step into a system built on Guardiola’s positional play, where midfielders are often required to sacrifice instinct for structure. Would Bruno thrive in that tactical straightjacket? Or would his strengths be blunted?
And then there’s the broader concern — City’s ongoing trend of recruiting from within the Premier League, often at inflated prices. Does this deal feel like long-term planning or a convenient marquee replacement?
In truth, while Bruno’s name carries weight, the sceptical fan may wonder whether City are pursuing profile over progression. For £100 million, there should be no doubts. Yet here, there just might be.
