Etihad Stadium officials still retain a significant amount of cash in the bank to invest in new signings this month, even after their triple arrivals confirmed this week.

Manchester City have brought in a mixture of defensive stability and added strength in addition to further attacking prowess through arrivals from French, German, and Brazilian football over the last seven days.

Abdukodir Khusanov became the club’s first official signing after the Uzbekistan international joined the club from RC Lens in a reported €40 million switch, followed less than 12 hours later by 19-year-old Brazilian youth international Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.

Arguably the most exciting arrival came later in the week in much-needed positivity after a 4-2 defeat to PSG, as City secured the services of the Bundesliga’s most in-form goal provider so far this season in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.

While those new arrivals are no doubt going to bring a much-needed lift into the club in terms of morale and energy, there remains a common sense within the Etihad Stadium fanbase that a defensive midfielder remains necessary in the days that remain.

According to a new report from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, sources outside of Manchester City were suggesting in the build-up to the ongoing January transfer window that the club had in the region of £200 million available to spend.

In the midfield department, which is yet to be addressed, it is pointed out that Douglas Luiz has been offered for a return to the club, but Juventus want to cash in while City only appear willing to sanction a straight loan with no obligation to buy next summer.

Manchester City have also been connected to Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso, although the report insists hardball is being played over the 24-year-old, while Atalanta’s Ederson has long-standing admirers at the Etihad Stadium in midfield.

For now, Manchester City will continue to source solutions to the long-term absence of Rodri from their existing crop of players, with Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan having been most recently called-upon by Pep Guardiola in the role.

There has also been a suggestion in some quarters that Pep Guardiola may prefer to operate with Manuel Akanji in the position alongside John Stones, but injuries and fitness problems leading to limited options at the back have prevented that from being trialled.

As such, the arrivals of Khusanov and Reis in particular may now open up the door for that solution to be trialled in some of the biggest games of Manchester City’s season that are on the horizon across the next few weeks.
