Manchester City have completed the signing of Japanese international defender Risa Shimizu on a three-year deal.

The 28-year-old full-back spent two seasons with The Hammers prior to her departure earlier this summer. She made 44 appearances for the East Londoners in the Barclays Women’s Super League in which she scored one goal. Prior to moving to England, Shimizu spent her entire career playing for Japanese WE League club Tokyo Verdy Beleza.

On the international stage, Shimizu has been capped by Japan on 78 occasions. She featured for Nadeshiko at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and at the FIFA Women’s World Cups in both 2019 and 2023.

After signing for Manchester City, Shimizu said “First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for. City play football with a high possession style, which I like. I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style.

“I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the [league] trophy with my new teammates.”

Shimizu becomes Manchester City’s second signing of the summer transfer window.
