It has always seemed to be only a matter of time before Maximo Perrone completed a permanent move from Manchester City to Como. The combative young midfielder had an impressive loan spell with Cesc Fabregas’ side last season. Manchester City have today confirmed Perrone’s sale to Como. The sale of Perrone shows just how hard it is for promising young players to break through at the Etihad.

Maximo Perrone has completed his move from Manchester City to Como.

Manchester City have confirmed the sale of Maximo Perrone to Como on mancity.com. Perrone spent three seasons at the club after being signed from Velez Sarsfield in January of 2023. Mike McGrath of the Telegraph has reported via X that the deal that sees Perrone sign for Como is worth up to €15 million. Furthermore, McGrath reports that Manchester City have inserted a 30% sell-on clause and has a buy-back clause included in the deal.

Perrone’s sale shows that the path for young players to break through at City is a difficult one.

Maximo Perrone joins a long list of talented young players to leave Manchester City. The list is long as there are a host of former City players making an impact across the Premier League and Europe. Perrone has the talent and potential to blossom as a player. But he won’t get the opportunity to do that at Manchester City.

But what his sale shows is just how difficult it is for talented young players to make the step up into the City first team. It is one thing to arrive at City as a young player with prodigious talent and untapped potential. It is another to fulfil that talent and potential and break into Pep Guardiola’s side. The Manchester City squad is filled with world-class players which highlights how good a young player has to be to break into the first team equation at City. That is no easy task and Perrone now joins the long list of players who couldn’t quite make that leap.

That isn’t to say that Maximo Perrone couldn’t one day develop into a player capable of playing for Manchester City. City have included a buy-back clause in the deal to sell Perrone to Como. But for now he isn’t quite ready to make that leap. Hence why City have sold him to the Serie A club. They have made a tidy profit and do retain the option of bringing Perrone back to the Etihad if he progresses as a player.
