Manchester City are preparing an offer for Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup as Scott Carson leaves the club, as per a new report.

Carson has spent six seasons at the Etihad Stadium in a backup role to Ederson and the likes of Zack Steffen and Stefan Ortega Moreno, maintaining popular influence in the Manchester City dressing room.

The 39-year-old won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 and before Manchester City eventually got over the line in 2023, the veteran Englishman remained the only member of Pep Guardiola’s squad to have tasted Champions League success.

However, the club have now confirmed Carson’s summer exit and it remains to be seen whether Ederson or Ortega Moreno follow him through the exit door as the pair continue to be linked with a departure ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Pep Guardiola recently said he expects Ederson and Ortega Moreno to continue with the club into the new season but the former wanted to leave for Saudi Arabia last summer and remains keen on a switch – and the latter wouldn’t refute a move back to Germany either.

However, as Manchester City announce the signings of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri before the ongoing transfer window shuts on Tuesday June 10, more fresh faces could be in the offing for the plane to the United States at the end of the week.

As per Mike McGrath reporting for Telegraph Sport, Manchester City are ready to offer Chelsea a small fee to sign goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli in time to be registered for the Club World Cup after announcing Carson’s upcoming departure.

Bettinelli joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Fulham in 2021 and has made just one senior appearance in four seasons with the recently-crowned UEFA Europa Conference League winners, who boast a strong former Manchester City contingent at Stamford Bridge.

Former Manchester City assistant coach Enzo Maresca took over as Chelsea manager from Maurico Pochettino last summer, with Cole Palmer joining the Blues from City for £40 million after playing a bit-part role in his boyhood club’s 2023 treble win.

Raheem Sterling moved to Chelsea from Manchester for £50 million in 2022 and the likes of Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap have also moved down south in recent seasons, signifying a growing Manchester City influence at Cobham.

Manchester City are wasting no time to finalise their Club World Cup squad ahead of the transfer deadline on Tuesday June 10 and will be looking to expedite negotiations with Chelsea over Bettinelli, who is entering the final 12 months of his current deal at Stamford Bridge.

Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker will be left out of the Club World Cup as the England duo look for new clubs. Grealish needs a fresh start to revitalise his international career and challenge for a seat on the 2026 FIFA World Cup jet – and Walker has been told he will be sold this summer as City pursue the signing of a new, long-term right-back.
