Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Boca Juniors left-back Valentin Barco after reaching an agreement in principle to sign him, reports TyC Sports journalist German Garcia Grova.
The Sky Blues’ representatives will next travel to Argentina to sort out a deal with Boca.
Barco was reportedly high on Brighton & Hove Albion’s wishlist, but Man City have beaten them in the race for his signature.
Rising through the youth ranks of Boca, Barco’s huge potential saw him getting named in the Guardian’s Next Generation list in 2021.
The 19-year-old has become an important player for Boca’s first team this season, making 18 appearances across all competitions.
He has played a part in Boca reaching the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, where they will face Brazilian side Palmeiras.
City have tapped into the Argentine market in recent years, snapping up some of the best talents, such as Julian Alvarez and Maximo Perrone.
Although Perrone is currently on loan at La Liga club Las Palmas, Alvarez has grown into a pivotal player for City.
The Argentine striker had an unforgettable 2022/23 season, lifting the World Cup with the national team and winning the treble with Man City.
Barco will be aiming for similar success with the Premier League champions, but it is unclear when he will move to the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola is reliant on unconventional players for the left-back position, and Barco will be hoping he can cut it in the first-team due to his versatility.
Man City will travel to the London Stadium tomorrow for the Premier League fixture against West Ham United.
