City Football Group – the parent company behind Manchester City – are set to profit from Manchester United’s blockbuster transfer of Bryan Mbeumo, according to reports.

The news comes as yet another example of the far-reaching financial benefits derived from City Football Group’s multi-club model, which continues to yield both developmental and commercial advantages for the Premier League giants.

While Manchester City themselves were not directly involved in the transfer of Mbeumo, CFG’s ownership of French side ESTAC Troyes has resulted in a sizeable financial windfall linked to the forward’s recent big-money move to Old Trafford.

Mbeumo – a product of Troyes’ academy system – spent several years progressing through the ranks in France before making a move to England with Brentford in 2019. At the time, Troyes successfully negotiated key clauses into his transfer – decisions which have now paid off in significant fashion.

Despite now being a Ligue 2 side, Troyes’ contribution to Mbeumo’s early development has enabled them to benefit heavily from the record-breaking deal between Brentford and Manchester United.

The 25-year-old developed a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous inverted wingers during his time at Brentford, and his rise to prominence has culminated in a move worth up to €81 million, and Troyes – and by extension, CFG – are now cashing in.

According to the information of local outlet L’Est-éclair, as translated and relayed by Get French Football News, City Football Group’s ESTAC Troyes are set to earn €9.4 million from Bryan Mbeumo’s €81 million move to Manchester United.

It is detailed that the Ligue 2 side are set to receive €7.4 million from a sell-on clause negotiated into the player’s contract when he was first sold to Brentford in 2019 for €6.6 million, which also included a €1 million bonus linked to Premier League promotion.

Troyes are also reportedly set to earn a further €2 million in training compensation and solidarity payments as a result of Manchester United’s mammoth investment in the Frenchman.

Troyes’ initial decision to implement favourable clauses when Mbeumo departed in 2019 was crucial, and it reflects CFG’s standard practice across its network of clubs to maximise future value.

The €9.4 million boost will be significant for the French side, who have been rebuilding after relegation from Ligue 1 and are aiming to re-establish themselves as a stable and competitive force in French football. With CFG’s backing, that kind of income could go toward player development, infrastructure, or further reinvestment into emerging talent.

From Manchester City’s perspective, the deal is a subtle reminder of the power of CFG’s football ecosystem. Even when players are not destined for the Etihad Stadium, the group’s influence across Europe allows them to generate financial returns from youth development and strategic sales.

Looking ahead, CFG may look to repeat this model with other players emerging from their satellite clubs. With high-potential talents across Girona, Lommel, Bahia, and Troyes regularly linked to top European leagues, more such clauses could come into play over the next few seasons.
