Officials at Manchester City have now opened contacts to gauge a better understanding of the situation surrounding transfer target Rodrygo, according to new developments.
This latest step marks a significant escalation in City’s pursuit of the Real Madrid forward, with Etihad Stadium chiefs seemingly preparing for the potential departure of Savinho to Tottenham.
The Premier League champgiantsons have been weighing up high-profile attacking options all summer, and Rodrygo – long admired by head coach Pep Guardiola – has quickly risen to the top of their shortlist.
The growing speculation around the Brazilian international comes during a period of notable change in Manchester City’s attacking department. Jack Grealish is finalising a season-long loan move to Everton, James McAtee is on the verge of joining Nottingham Forest permanently, and Savinho appears closer than ever to sealing a switch to North London.
Such exits would leave Pep Guardiola with a reduced pool of natural wingers heading into the 2025/26 campaign, and Rodrygo has been a consistent performer for Los Blancos since his move from Santos in 2019, playing a crucial role in their Champions League and La Liga triumphs.
His pace, direct dribbling, and knack for scoring in decisive moments have made him a fan favourite in Madrid, but also an attractive proposition for top European clubs, especially those seeking versatility across the forward line.
Now, according to the information of Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have a serious interest in Rodrygo and have started contacts to understand the player’s situation and feelings.
Alongside those of the player himself, it is reported that City are also understanding the mood among his family and his representatives, as well as Real Madrid – who are said to be open to a sale this summer for an important fee of around €100 million.
However, from the side of Manchester City, it is claimed that the Premier League giants hope to eventually negotiate on the aforementioned price.
If City decide to proceed, much will depend on how flexible Real Madrid are in their valuation. While €100 million reflects the winger’s status and achievements, Pep Guardiola’s side are expected to explore ways of structuring a deal that would spread the cost.
A move for Rodrygo would also represent a clear statement of intent from Manchester City, reinforcing their attacking depth with a proven UEFA Champions League performer. For the player, the chance to work under Guardiola in a Premier League-winning environment could prove tempting.
Though Madrid’s stature and his current role in the team will also factor heavily into his decision, and with the summer window entering a decisive phase, this could quickly develop into one of the standout transfer stories of the summer.
