Wolverhampton Wanderers have today confirmed the signing of Tommy Doyle from Manchester City, with the deal set to become official on July 1 2024.

Doyle first joined Manchester City at the age of eight, before going on to turn down a loan move to Preston North End on deadline day in 2020, with the intention of fighting for a place in Pep Guardiola’s first team.

The last season saw Doyle enjoy a successful loan spell with Sheffield United across the 2022/23 campaign, helping the Blades to promotion out of the Championship and into the Premier League, as well as reaching the FA Cup semi-finals against Manchester City.

The 22-year-old has also undertaken temporary spells with both Bundesliga side SV Hamburg and Cardiff City across the 2021/22 season, while the midfielder is notably the grandson of club legends Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe.

Prior to making his next permanent steps in football, as announced this week, Doyle made his Manchester City first team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton in 2019, before making seven appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions.

Now, as per confirmation from Premier League side Wolves, Tommy Doyle will officially join the Molineux club on a permanent deal that goes through on July 1 2024, bringing an end to his 14-year association with Manchester City.

It is understood that Wolves officials will pay a fee just under £5 million to Manchester City, with the reigning Premier League champions retaining a 50 per cent sell-on and buy-back clause in the agreement.

However, with the deal not going through formally until July 1, Tommy Doyle will remain ineligible to face Manchester City when the two sides meet in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Doyle’s exit from the Etihad Stadium makes him the first exit ahead of a summer transfer window that is expected to be busy for Manchester City officials, both in the way of incomings and outgoings.

Uncertainty continues to loom over the future of Bernardo Silva and Stefan Ortega in particular, whilst Kalvin Phillips is widely expected to make another move away from Manchester City, with a permanent exit not ruled out.
