With Arsenal ready to sell Alexis Sánchez this month, Manchester City have made their move.
The Chilean forward was certain a move to the Etihad Stadium was through back in August, only for Arsenal to pull the plug at the last moment as they could not sign a replacement.
Currently running away with the Premier League, Manchester City were expected to sign Alexis for free when his contract expires in the summer but are eager to add him to their squad now after Gabriel Jesus suffered an injury on New Year’s Eve.
Alexis is also eligible for the Champions League, as he isn’t cup-tied. According to the Mirror and the Guardian, City have now decided to open negotiations with Arsenal.
The Premier League leaders are hoping to seal a deal worth around £25m for the Chilean. However, he is expected to cost closer to £30m.
Just a few days ago Arsenal were said to want £35m for the 29-year-old but that no longer appears to be the case.
With Arsenal sixth in the Premier League and out of the FA Cup, the Gunners are preparing something of a fire sale. Squad members Francis Coquelin, Theo Walcott, and Mathieu Debuchy are all expected to leave this month.
On top of that, Mesut Özil and Jack Wilshere are both yet to agree new deals and – like Alexis – can leave the club for free at the end of the season.
