Manchester City could be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer. Heading into the summer transfer window, the possibility that Ederson could leave the club this summer is very real. Ederson showed just how important he remains to Pep Guardiola’s side as he put in a superb performance against Fulham at Craven Cottage. That’s what Manchester City could lose this summer.
Replacing Ederson would be no easy task. He has a specific set of skills in his possession that are almost impossible to replace. The Brazilian international is also a fine shot-stopper. Ederson’s impact for Manchester City since arriving at the club has been profound. Replacing him would be no easy task if he does leave the club.
Now, a new report indicates that Manchester City has an agreement in principle on personal terms with Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Garcia is a fine young keeper who could be the ideal keeper to fill the void that Ederson’s departure could create.
Spanish journalist Xavi Espinosa has reported that Manchester City has reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Joan Garcia over a potential summer move to the club. Furthermore, Espinosa reports that Newcastle United and Barcelona have also expressed interest in signing Joan Garcia. Xavi Espinosa further reports that Joan Garcia now has a choice to make between Manchester City, Newcastle and Barcelona. Lastly, Espinosa adds that City are also chasing a deal for Diogo Costa. But the FC Porto keeper is considered an alternative to Joan Garcia as per Xavi Espinosa’s report.
As a goalkeeper, Joan Garcia is one of the best young keepers in Europe. He has had a superb season for Espanyol. Joan Garcia’s shot-stopping ability is elite and his ability to claim crosses is also of the highest calibre. He is adept with the ball at his feet, and his long ball delivery is another strong attribute of his play. Joan Garcia is also only 24 years of age so his best years are ahead of him. It’s easy to see why Manchester City would have an interest in signing the impressive young keeper. Joan Garcia has all of the tools required to potentially be Manchester City’s number-one keeper for many years to come. The clip below shows just how good a goalkeeper Joan Garcia already is.
Of course, any Manchester City move for Joan Garcia may be dependent on Ederson and Stefan Ortega’s futures. It will also depend on where the young goalkeeper wants to play next season. But Manchester City appear to have put their hat in that particular ring so to speak so it now remains to be seen where Joan Garcia wants to play his football at for next season and beyond.
