Manchester City have reached an agreement with back-up goalkeeper Scott Carson over an extended stay at the Etihad Stadium, according to reports.

The 38-year-old first signed for Manchester City during the summer transfer window of 2019 on an initial loan deal for the 2019/2020 campaign, acting as third choice shot-stopper behind Ederson and Claudio Bravo.

That temporary agreement was then extended by a further 12 months into the 2020/2021 campaign, before Carson was issued his Manchester City first-team debut and his first Premier League appearance in almost a decade in a 3-4 win away over Newcastle United.

Joining Manchester City on a permanent agreement in 2021 following the expiry of his Derby County contract, Carson would extend his stay into a fourth season in 2022, and sign another one-year extension to keep him at the club until the end of the ongoing season in 2023.

Such is Manchester City’s faith in the impact of Carson that there has been a fresh development on the future of the goalkeeper within the game, with his deal expiring in the coming weeks.

According to the information of MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson is set to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium by signing a new one-year contract in the coming weeks.

Carson is labelled as a ‘hugely popular member’ of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, and is seen as somebody who can ‘push’ Ederson and Stefan Ortega in training, whilst becoming an ‘integral member of the dressing room’ across his five years at the club.

Clarity over the future of Carson comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his two goalkeeping colleagues at the Etihad Stadium, with both Ederson and Stefan Ortega at the centre of increasing transfer umours.

The Brazilian is understood to be subject to ambitious interest from the Saudi Pro League, with Manchester City officials growing increasingly concerned over whether the 30-year-old may be tempted by a change of career following seven years at the club.

As for Stefan Ortega, the German stopper is expected to be keen on an improved role within a top European side as he eyes a concrete first-team starting position. Should that not be possible at City, despite his desire to stay, then he would not be opposed to an exit.
