Manchester City goalkeeper Sandy MacIver has ruled herself out of selection for England for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Cityzens confirmed the news via a post on their official club Twitter account this morning.

MacIver has been nursing an injury for the last seven weeks. The player sustained her injury whilst training with the England squad at St George’s Park ahead of last month’s Women’s Finalissima fixture against Brazil. The keeper has been rehabilitating back at Manchester City and she has opted to rule herself out of FIFA Women’s World Cup selection this summer in a bid to fully focus on regaining her fitness.

After making the difficult decision to rule herself out of potential FIFA Women’s World Cup duty, MacIver said “I’ve taken the decision to make myself unavailable for England selection moving forward. My current focus remains on my rehab. I am making great progress and look forward to a fully fit pre-season with City.

“Wishing all the girls the best of luck in Australia!”

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor may have to name just one goalkeeper in his squad for the club’s final match of the Barclays Women’s Super League season against Everton on Saturday. In addition to MacIver’s absence, first-choice keeper Ellie Roebuck is suspended. Khiara Keating is set to deputise.
