He has since been touted for a move to Europe, and it was recently claimed that his agent was in discussions with interested clubs.

The Cityzens are now clear favourites to land his signature. They are currently sorting out terms for the potential transfer.

River Plate will receive €16 million up front for the 21-year-old, who is likely to stay on loan until the end of the English season.

Our view:

Alvarez has made a big impression at River Plate. His goalscoring prowess recently earned him his maiden cap with Argentina.

Aside from his goals, the youngster has impressed with his dribbling ability and clever passing and has not shied away from making tackles.

He has been compared to Sergio Aguero. There are no surprises that the Cityzens are eyeing a player with a similar build to their legend.

Of course, Alvarez is only at the beginning of his career, but City have ensured that they have stolen a march on others.

Clubs such as Ajax are always on the lookout for quality young talent. The Dutch giants have recruited several young South American stars.

The Cityzens opted against signing a high-profile replacement for Aguero after his summer exit. Alvarez will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill.
