Sergio Aguero believes that Manchester City remain the favourite to win ‘everything’ this season, despite the ongoing four-game losing streak across competitions.
The latest comments come at a time when Pep Guardiola and his players are battling a torrid run of form across competitions, losing all of their last four matches and exiting the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage in the process.
City remain in a strong position in the UEFA Champions League table and the Premier League, but know that their form must turn around immediately after the international break if they are to remain in contention for the biggest honours.
As part of that turnaround, City will also be wanting their key injured stars to return as well as those with fitness problems to fully recover, namely the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, and John Stones.
But despite all of that, one of the club’s greatest-ever players – who certainly knows the inside workings of the Etihad Stadium and the operation overseen by Pep Guardiola all too well – believes the biggest trophies remain destined for Manchester City.
Speaking to reporters this week, Sergio Aguero has insisted that Guardiola and City remain the favourites to win everything remaining this season due to the presence of their legendary head coach alone.
“I think City are favourites to win everything… Whatever City has to play for, they’ll be the firm favourites. But I think it all depends on the mentality they have because it’s not easy to always be the favourites,” Aguero exclaimed.
“I think City are where they are because Guardiola knows very well how to keep that mentality. For me, he’s the key man for the club so that the players have the same winning mentality… All the time, he’s like, ‘Come on, we have to keep winning!’
“Living that every day can get exhausting sooner or later, but he’s been doing this for days, months, even years, and I think that’s why City are one of the favourites, because Pep never rests and he never gives a rest to his players. That, for me, is the key to success for any team.”
Continuing on the subject of Pep Guardiola, Aguero explained, “He never rests, and I’ve seen that personally. He’s always three games ahead. His mind is like a perfect schedule. I once asked him a question about a team we were going to face, and he said he had it all planned out.
“That was two weeks before we played against that team. In the end, his job is what he’s passionate about, but he doesn’t take it as any ordinary job, he wants to win.
“If he doesn’t, he gets really upset, so he’s always going to do everything he can so that City are always favourites.”
Manchester City will reignite their season following the final international break of 2024 with a Premier League meeting against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 23 November.
