In a recent interview (via ESPN), Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Sergio Gomez after the Mancunian giants agreed to sign him from Anderlecht recently. Guardiola said,

“He’s (Gomez) a talented young player from the Barcelona academy, went to Borussia Dortmund but didn’t have many minutes and in the last year was given a chance by Kompany.

“He played well, we targeted him to bring him here.

“He’s an exceptional player.

“He’s going to stay with us, alongside Joao.”

Gomez’s Impressive Form At The Lotto Park

Gomez had a fruitful season at Anderlecht as he put in a lot of impressive displays on the left side of their defence. The Badalona-born talent made 49 appearances for the Belgian outfit in the previous campaign, registering seven goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

The 21-year-old managed to influence the game at both ends of the field by averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.7 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Jupiler Pro League. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after completing 83.2% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Manchester City Head Coach Pep Guardiola Was Full Of Praise For Gomez: Is He A Prospect For The Future?

Gomez is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make a few crucial interceptions inside his half. He usually clears the danger when required and can make a few driving runs with the ball down the left flank.

The Spanish starlet can even create a handful of decent chances for his teammates to score and is a good striker of the ball as well. He is primarily a left-back but can also play as a left-sided wide player or at right-back if his manager asks him to do so.

At 21, the future is quite bright for Gomez as long as he continues to improve his all-around game with each year. Man City boss Pep Guardiola could be the ideal man to oversee his development over the next decade. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in England.

There is no denying that Gomez is a prospect to watch out for in the future. Hence, the Mancunian giants have done well to agree on a deal for him this summer as he has what it takes to serve as a decent understudy to Joao Cancelo at the Etihad Stadium.
