Manchester City are willing to £50 million to add a quality keeper to their squad

Entering the summer transfer window Manchester City could be in the market for a new goalkeeper. As it stands currently, uncertainty surrounds the futures of Ederson and Stefan Ortega. To replace Ederson, City would need to find a quality keeper to replace him if he did leave the club this summer. Ederson has been a stalwart for the club. Stefan Ortega is a quality backup keeper, but he could seek more first-team opportunities elsewhere this summer.

Now a new report from Simon Mullock for the Mirror indicates that Manchester City are prepared to sign £50 million to sign FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa. Furthermore, Mullock reports that the Portuguese keeper has a £63 million release clause in his contract. But that isn’t a price that City are willing to pay. Mullock adds that Hugo Viana’s close relationship with Diogo Costa’s agent, Jorge Mendes, may see Manchester City land Diogo Costa for £50 million. Lastly, Mullock reports that Ederson’s recent injury has forced City to assess their goalkeeping options ahead of the summer.

Given Diogo Costa’s pedigree, you’d assume that the FC Porto keeper would potentially be a replacement for Ederson. Ederson is City’s number-one keeper and it’s hard to see the Portuguese international coming to the Etihad to be a backup keeper. He is too good and too well-established as a top-quality keeper to settle for that role. He is a quality keeper who’d be a good replacement for Ederson if the Brazilian international were to leave Manchester City this summer. At 25 years of age Costa has his best football in front of him. He is also a quality shot-stopper and is good with his feet.

Summary.

Simon Mullock’s report indicates that City may have identified Diogo Costa as a potential candidate to replace Ederson. If Mullock’s report is accurate a £50 million price tag seems fair for the FC Porto keeper. It now remains to be seen if it’s a move the world champions have to make. That will depend on whether or not Ederson or Stefan Ortega leave the club this summer.
