Yesterday it seemed that Manchester City’s moves for Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders were coming together quickly. Given that the Manchester City chairman stated that his club’s goal was to bring in their summer signings for the FIFA Club World Cup, yesterday’s news didn’t come as a major surprise. Now two new reports that have emerged today show that Manchester City are wasting no time ahead of the summer transfer window. It now seems that Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki could become City players sooner rather than later.

Manchester City are making quick progress with their moves for Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.

Santi Aouna has reported via X that Rayan Cherki has said yes to a move to Manchester City. Furthermore, Aouna reports that there are expected to be no issues with personal terms between Cherki and Manchester City. Aouna further reports that Pep Guardiola has already spoken to Cherki about a potential move to the Etihad. It is also included in Aouna’s report that Cherki could join City from Lyon for €40 million. Lastly, Aouna reports that City want to sign Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders before the FIFA Club World Cup.

Manchester City’s moves for Cherki and Reijnders would add a new dimension to Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Manchester City’s potential moves for Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders would add another dimension to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Both players are adept at getting forward. In the case of Cherki, he is a player who thrives in tight spaces. His ability on the ball is almost unparalleled in European football. Pep Guardiola’s side often has to contend with and unlock low defensive blocks in the majority of their games. Rayan Cherki is a player who could help City unlock the door so to speak. He’d add something that Manchester City’s squad desperately lacks. It now seems to be a matter of time before City sign Cherki based on Santi Aouna’s report.

If, as expected, Tijjani Reijnders signs for Manchester City, they’d be signing a midfielder with an eye for goal. Reijnders is blessed with the ability to make late runs into the box ala Ilkay Gundogan in his prime. He also is blessed with tremendous technical ability and an engine which allows him to get around the pitch. Reijnders would add something that Manchester City’s midfield lacked throughout the 24/25 season.

Of course, nothing is official until either Rayan Cherki or Tijjani Reijnders is pictured holding a Manchester City shirt. But based on today’s reports, it seems that City are edging closer to landing two of their top transfer targets. But what today’s news also shows is that City are moving quickly to get a head start on new signings. That is a massive signal of intent from Manchester City.
