Manchester City have signed five players so far this summer. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Sverre Nypan have all been brought in by City. It now looks like Pep Guardiola’s side is set to make its sixth signing of the summer. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City and Burnley have agreed on a deal that will see Trafford return to the Etihad. In signing Trafford, City may have signed their next number-one goalkeeper for a decade if Trafford develops as expected.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City have agreed to sign James Trafford from Burnley. Furthermore, Romano reports that Trafford will return to the Etihad in a deal that is worth less than the £40 million buy-back clause City held over the young goalkeeper. It is also reported by Romano that Pep Guardiola was eager to bring Trafford back to the club. Lastly, Fabrizio Romano reports that Newcastle United have been informed of James Trafford’s decision.
It is great news to read that James Trafford is set to return to Manchester City. The young goalkeeper rose through the ranks at the club before signing for Burnley in a permanent deal. He spent two seasons at Burnley and has risen to become one of the brightest young English goalkeeping prospects in the game. It is fitting to see Trafford set to return to the Etihad as he has always seemed destined to become Manchester City’s number-one goalkeeper.
But with James Trafford’s arrival seemingly imminent it would seem to indicate that either Ederson or Stefan Ortega could be set to leave the club. It is difficult to see City signing James Trafford without that occurring. David Ornstein has reported for the Athletic that Ederson is set to stay at Manchester City for this season. Furthermore, Ornstein reports that Stefan Ortega is likely to leave City but a deal that will see this occur isn’t imminent.
But that particular move will come in time. For now, it is exciting news to learn that James Trafford is set to return to Manchester City. Trafford always had the potential to one day be City’s next first-choice goalkeeper. Now it seems that he is set to be given that opportunity.
