Ross County manager Malky Mackay has confirmed that Sheffield United are set to recall goalkeeper Jake Eastwood from his loan spell with the Scottish Premiership club.

Having come through the youth ranks at Sheffield United, Eastwood has only ever made three senior appearances for the Blades across all competitions.

The goalkeeper has also had a number of spells out on loan elsewhere, the latest of which saw him head north of the border to join Ross County back in the summer transfer window.

However, that move is one that has failed to work out for the 26-year-old, who has made just two appearances in the League Cup for Mackay’s side.

As a result, it seems as though the goalkeeper is now set to make a somewhat premature return to Bramall Lane, juding by these latest comments from Mackay.

Providing an update on the future of Eastwood, the Ross County manager was quoted by The Sheffield Star as saying: “Jake is going to go back to Sheffield United.

“He has been a great pro here for the first half of the season, but Ross [Munro’s] form has meant that his chances and opportunities have been more limited than they might have been.

“He’s a good lad, and at his age he needs to play, so I had a conversation with him and I think he’s going to look to see what his situation is in the coming week.

“He might go right back out on loan to somewhere in England, but here Ross will step up.

“There are no numbers to him, but Ross will be our sub goalie. He has done really well, he’s a really good pro and he will come in as number two at the moment.”

Sheffield United have already recalled defender Harry Boyes and striker Will Osula from loan spells with Forest Green and Derby respectively during the January window.

This does feel like it is probably the best thing to happen for Eastwood right now.

At 26-years-old, the goalkeeper looks to be at a stage of his career where he ought to be playing regular football, something he is not currently doing with Ross County.

It makes sense therefore, to recall him from this loan spell, although you imagine that will have to be with a view to sending him out elsewhere in the current window.

Wes Foderingham is well established as the Blades’ number one, with Adam Davies offering capable back-up, meaning it is hard to Eastwood getting into their side either this season, and meaning another move will be best if he wants to get more opportunities on the pitch.
