Stevenage manager Steve Evans has revealed that Norwich City have recalled Saxon Earley from his loan spell with the League Two side, to sell him to a League One club.

Having come through the youth ranks at Norwich, Earley never made a senior appearance for the Canaries, before being loaned to Stevenage in the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old has since made 26 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring once in a League Cup win at Reading.

His latest outing come in a 3-1 win over Crawley Town on Friday night, that keeps The Boro second in the League Two table.

However, it seems as though that outing is set to be the final one that Earley makes in a Stevenage shirt, with the full-back now set to be given his chance in the third-tier, on a longer term basis.

Providing an update on Earley’s situation after that victory against Crawley, Evans told The Comet: “Norwich have sold Saxon to a very top-end League One club for a lot of money.

“I’ve just said to the group, he arrived here as a kid but he leaves as a man. He’s been absolutely fantastic for us and we all owe a debt to him for how well he’s played for us.

“We hope plays Championship football next season because he has a job to do when he goes where he goes.”

The Verdict

This certainly feels like a frustrating update for those of a Stevenage persuasion.

Earley has clearly made a positive impact for the club, so it will be a big blow to lose his influence when there is still so long to go in the race for promotion.

However, given he is out of contract at Norwich at the end of this season, you can’t blame the Canaries for selling him now, while they still have a chance to receive a fee for him.

Indeed, the chance to move up a level with this deal is one that Earley himself will surely relish, so you can understand why those involved have agreed to make this deal happen.
