Manchester United have introduced a ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ at the club.

The ‘Ronaldo rule’ will limit salaries to £200,000-a-week maximum to keep their wage bill at manageable levels.

According to the Daily Mail, United want to ensure no player is paid significantly more than their teammates – much like Ronaldo was when he was at the club.

What is the ‘Ronaldo rule’?

But to cap salaries to £200,000-per-week is a huge change for a club with an estimated annual wage bill of £228 million – the highest in the Premier League.

Limiting weekly salaries to £200,000-per-week will leave plenty of current players facing a paycut.

According to Alex Turk, there are currently six players on more than that.

The first is David de Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper is currently on £375,000-per-week. However, his current deal expires in the summer and will be offered a far lower ‘take it or leave it’ offer.

Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho (£350k), Raphael Varane (£340k), Casemiro (£300k), Anthony Martial (£250k) and Bruno Fernandes (£240k) are all being paid more than £200,000-per-week.

Another issue is attempting to keep Marcus Rashford at the club, who is believed to already earn around £200,000-per-week.

Rashford has been in fantastic form his season but his current deal also expires this summer. , it’s clear United can no longer compete with the finances of the French club.

What did Ten Hag say about Man Utd’s recruitment?

Interestingly, earlier this week, Ten Hag spoke about the club’s poor recruitment in recent years with ‘an unimaginable number’ of players that weren’t ‘good enough.’

“Manchester United didn’t exactly have the fear factor last season,” Ten Hag said.

“There was no spirit. I saw no team dynamic in the squad. The mental resilience was very low. I saw that as an outsider – and also noticed it in my first weeks at the club.

“I looked at the culture of the club. I asked ‘how did Manchester United become great?’

“The club has bought an unimaginable number of players in recent years who have not been good enough.

“Most purchases have been average – and at United average is not good enough. United’s shirt weighs heavily.”
