How both teams go into Man Utd vs Lyon

The Europa League is Man Utd’s only chance to secure European football for next season. And they’ve fared much better in this competition than they have the Premier League in 2024-25. The Red Devils finished third in the group stage, unbeaten in their eight matches with five wins and three draws. That record earned them direct passage into the last 16, despite having three different managers in the group stage. Man Utd remain unbeaten in the competition, after a 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad in the last 16, courtesy of a 1-1 draw and 4-1 victory. They almost had another win in the first leg against Lyon, coming from behind to lead 2-1 late on. But a late equaliser, and errors from Andre Onana, saw Man Utd settle for a draw.

Lyon also finished in the top eight of the group stage, earning direct passage into the last 16. The French side won four of their eight group stage games, with three draws and one defeat. They then had a strong showing in the last 16, thrashing Romanian side FCSB 7-1 on aggregate. And Lyon will likely curse a lost lead against Man Utd, though they did come back to rescue the draw late on.

Man Utd team news

Man Utd will continue to assess Matthijs de Ligt, though he is unlikely to be back in time for this game. Amad Diallo and Ayden Heaven are also injured, with Lisandro Martinez out for the rest of the year.

Lyon team news

Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah are long-term absentees for Lyon. Paul Akouokou had to come off injured in the first leg after a knock, and will be assessed.
