Manchester United will be looking to book their spot in the semi-finals of the Europa League when they host Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday 17th April at 8pm. The two sides played out a 2-2 draw in the first leg in France, so it’s all to play for. This game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1.
Manchester United are priced as short as 4/6 with some bookmakers to win this game inside 90 minutes, and I think you’d have to be incredibly brave to be going anywhere near those short odds. United have been the model of inconsistency this season and were beaten 4-1 away at Newcastle in their most recent outing. United have kept just two clean sheets in 15 matches under Ruben Amorim and I think they will struggle to shut out the visitors, who have been scoring for fun in the last few months.
Lyon’s season has been revitalised by Paulo Fonseca, who has won nine of his 13 matches since taking charge of the club. Furthermore, his side have scored at least two goals in all 13 of those matches under his tenure, a remarkable record. At 11/10 for the visitors to avoid defeat, this looks a price that we can get behind considering United’s woes this season.
Rayan Cherki has been one of Lyon’s standout performers this season. The 21-year-old has managed eight assists in the Europa League, three more than any other player in the competition. Four of those have come away from home in Europe. Since Fonseca took over, he has 10 assists in 12 starts and also ranks first in Ligue 1 this season for expected assists.
The Europa League is Man Utd’s only chance to secure European football for next season. And they’ve fared much better in this competition than they have the Premier League in 2024-25. The Red Devils finished third in the group stage, unbeaten in their eight matches with five wins and three draws. That record earned them direct passage into the last 16, despite having three different managers in the group stage. Man Utd remain unbeaten in the competition, after a 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad in the last 16, courtesy of a 1-1 draw and 4-1 victory. They almost had another win in the first leg against Lyon, coming from behind to lead 2-1 late on. But a late equaliser and errors from Andre Onana saw Man Utd settle for a draw.
Lyon also finished in the top eight of the group stage, earning direct passage into the last 16. The French side won four of their eight group stage games, with three draws and one defeat. They then had a strong showing in the last 16, thrashing Romanian side FCSB 7-1 on aggregate. And Lyon will likely curse a lost lead against Man Utd, though they did come back to rescue the draw late on.
Man Utd will continue to assess Matthijs de Ligt, though he is unlikely to be back in time for this game. Amad Diallo and Ayden Heaven are also injured, with Lisandro Martinez out for the rest of the year.
Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah are long-term absentees for Lyon. Paul Akouokou had to come off injured in the first leg after a knock, and will be assessed.
Man Utd are unbeaten in their five matches against Lyon. The Red Devils have won both of their home matches in this fixture, with three draws away from home.
