Manchester United conclude their difficult Premier League campaign at home to Champions League-chasing Aston Villa on Sunday 25th May at 4pm.
Ruben Amorim’s side will be eager to see the back of this season, in which Man Utd will record their lowest ever finish in the division. But by the time this game comes around, they may have salvaged something with victory in the Europa League Final.
That would secure their return to the Champions League, with Villa in strong contention to join them by securing a top-five finish.
Ollie Watkins’ winner at Bournemouth in Gameweek 36 saw him officially become Villa’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. It was also his third goal in five league games, and he will fancy continuing that streak against Man Utd’s leaky defence.
One of Man Utd standout performances of the season saw them go and beat Athletic Bilbao 0-3 away from home in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. However, that rare bright light during an otherwise dark campaign represents the only clean sheet in their last nine matches across all competitions.
The Europa League adventure has provided a welcome distraction for Man Utd in the midst of their hugely disappointing Premier League campaign. Amorim’s side are now without a victory in seven league games, while losing four of their most recent five.
By contrast, Villa have hit form at an ideal time, as they look to secure successive seasons of Champions League football.
Unai Emery’s team have won eight of their last 10 Premier League matches, and another two victories in their final two games will give them every opportunity of sealing a top-five finish.
Matthijs de Ligt and Diogo Dalot may be fit to return from injury, while it remains to be seen whether or not Leny Yoro will be available. However, Man Utd will be without Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee due to season-ending injuries.
Jacob Ramsey will be available for selection once more after serving a one-match suspension for his red card against Bournemouth. Youri Tielemans could also return to contention after injury, but United loanee Marcus Rashford is ineligible to face his parent club.
Man Utd are unbeaten in each of their last five meetings with Villa, though a goalless draw in their latest showdown ended a run of four straight wins.
