Manchester United’s Under-18s were crowned Premier League Cup champions after defeating Manchester City 2-1 at the Leigh Sports Village on Tuesday evening.
Ethan Wheatley was the standout performer for the hosts, scoring a brace of goals in the first half.
United’s senior team have had a miserable 2023-24 campaign and are almost certain to miss out on Champions League qualification.
However, the opposite is true for the young Red Devils, who registered cup success just days after winning the U18 Premier League North title.
Adam Lawrence’s side netted the opening goal in the seventh minute in front of a sold-out Leigh Sports Village crowd, with Wheatley unleashing a powerful strike that rocketed past the goalkeeper.
The visitors responded well by launching several attacks but United’s defenders held strong in the face of the pressure.
Wheatley added another midway through the first half by rounding the City goalkeeper before firing a shot into the back of the net.
City attempted to battle back into the game in the second half but failed to create many clear-cut chances.
Stephen Mfuni’s 85th-minute header sparked faint hopes of a comeback for the visitors, but United held on for an impressive 2-1 victory.
