Manchester United’s season went from bad to worse last weekend when an opening day defeat was followed by an embarrassing four-goal defeat to Brentford.

Two losses out of two means that Erik ten Hag has become the first United manager to lose his opening two fixtures in roughly 100 years.

The poor start to the season has once again shone the light on United’s transfer activity and there’s a lot to unpack for Ten Hag, who has introduced three new faces to the squad.

Two of them were defenders and Christian Eriksen, the only midfielder signed, was a free agent. None of United’s biggest issues have been addressed and now, some senior players have reportedly urged the club to improve the squad before the transfer window shuts in two weeks.

That’s according to The Mirror, who say that Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford are among those to have told the board to sign some players.

As per the report, the players in question have sent an SOS the board’s way, urging them to sign some players in a bid to recover from the catastrophic start to Ten Hag’s reign at the club.

It’s also claimed that United players feel the club are showing a lack of ambition in the market after not addressing the areas of the squad in most urgent need of surgery.

SN’s verdict… It’s a big ask for these players to start performing themselves – they have proven that over several years. Their cry for new signings are fair but for most of them, supporters would be keen to see new players replace this lot.

Fans are desperate for change, on and off the pitch, but they are unlikely to get it as long as the Glazer family retains a majority stake in the club.

On the pitch, Ten Hag has a mammoth of a job on his hands and a couple of new players won’t get United out of the mess they’re in. But it would be a start and he will be desperate to land at least two or three new players before next month’s deadline.
