Man Utd team news vs Lyon

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim is without centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who missed last weekend’s Premier League draw with Manchester City due to injury and has not been named in the travelling party.

Luke Shaw returned to the squad against Man City but is unlikely to displace January signing Patrick Dorgu at left wing-back, while Kobbie Mainoo is also available.

The young midfielder has been sidelined since Man Utd’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Leicester City at the start of February, a week after he scored against FCSB in his most recent Europa League appearance.

Mason Mount is expected to be on the bench again and the Red Devils are missing injured defenders Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans and Ayden Heaven, as well as winger Amad Diallo.

Teenage striker Chido Obi has not been registered to play in the Europa League so Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are vying to lead the line.

Matic takes jab at former club

Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League and on course for their worst top-flight finish since 1989-90. So all their eggs are in the Europa League basket.

Manager Amorim has struggled to get consistent performances out of the Red Devils since his arrival in November, although their 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad in the last 16 was a rare highlight.

The Spanish club led 2-1 on aggregate early in the second leg at Old Trafford before a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick sealed Man Utd’s progress to the quarter-finals.

Fernandes has scored or set up 17 of his side’s 37 Premier League goals this season, also contributing four goals and two assists in the Europa League.

That competition has been kind to striker Hojlund, who has scored five goals in 596 minutes of European action this season compared with three goals in 1,557 minutes in the Premier League.

At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Andre Onana came up with some fighting talk before the first leg against Lyon, declaring that “it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them”.

That comment drew an angry response from Lyon’s former Man Utd midfielder Nemanja Matic, who described Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history”.

Onana may have to back up his pre-match words with a few saves in France as Lyon have scored 18 goals in their last six home matches and they eased past FCSB 7-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.

As well as Matic, Lyon’s squad features former Arsenal players Alexandre Lacazette and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Highly-rated playmaker Rayan Cherki, who has registered eight assists in just nine Europa League starts this season, is another of the hosts’ attacking threats.
