Manchester United play their penultimate fixture in a disappointing Premier League campaign as they take on top-five contenders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
Man Utd (3-4-2-1): Bayindir; Mazraoui, Lindelof, Shaw; Diallo, Eriksen, Ugarte, Amass; Mainoo, Garnacho; Obi-Martin.
The game kicks off at 8:15pm and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event.
While Chelsea have the luxury of their European final falling after the Premier League season is over — facing Real Betis in the Conference League showpiece on 28th May — Man Utd’s Europa League Final against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao is coming up next Wednesday. So manager Rubem Amorim will be taking few risks with his team selection.
Man Utd could still finish as high as 13th if they win their last two league games. But it is likely to be a case of the Red Devils just wanting to get this match out of the way to focus their efforts on the chance of winning a continental trophy against injury-hit Tottenham and nabbing a Champions League spot in the process.
It is therefore set to be a far from full-strength side that steps onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge.
Defenders Leny Yoro, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven are all set to miss the game, while Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee are long-term absentees. Midfielder Toby Collyer has returned to training after injury but may not be risked.
Forward Chido Obi-Martin, who made his first start in the 4-3 Premier League defeat to Brentford, could get another chance, while Tyler Fredricson and Jaydan Kamason could also come into the side if Amorim decides to leave out Noussair Mazraoui or Amad Diallo.
Amorim caused a stir with his comments after Sunday’s 0-2 home defeat to West Ham United, which led to speculation that the Portuguese boss may be on the brink of resigning.
However, Amorim cleared up the situation in a midweek press conference and made clear he wants to be the manager who turns things around at Old Trafford, preferably starting with a Europa League win next week.
The only two 90-minute wins the Red Devils have had in their last 11 games in all competitions both came against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League. And they will head to Stamford Bridge on a run of five defeats and two draws in their last seven Premier League matches.
Amorim said he is not thinking of walking out but that results clearly need to improve.
“What I’m saying is since I arrived here, I’m always talking about the standards and I cannot see the team having these results, especially in the Premier League, and not say nothing and not take the responsibility,” he said.
“I have a clear idea what to do. I understand the problems of the team, so I’m far from quitting.
“What I’m saying is we need to perform. If we have this season in the future, we need to perform, or else they will change us. That is a normal thing. Especially after a match, that was my feeling and it still is my feeling today.”
