Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants a mobile number eight and Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has been identified, reports The Athletic.

The Dutchman believes the England international has the right attributes as he can combine an attacking edge with defensive intelligence.

Mount is readying for the move and agreeing personal terms will not be a problem.

Talks have been held between the directors of both clubs, but there is a significant gap in valuations.

Chelsea want £70 million plus add-ons to sell the 24-year-old, but Man United began pitching around the £40m mark.

Mount has just 12 months left on his contract, and not many clubs will be keen to meet the Blues’ demands.

The Chelsea academy graduate has already said his goodbyes to the fans and the club have to sell him this summer.

They cannot afford to lose him for free next summer and may need to settle for between £40-50m to sell him, which is a good deal.

Mount first caught the eyes of Ten Hag during his loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem in 2018.

The Chelsea star impressed against his Ajax side, and they could finally be working together five years later.

Failure to qualify for any European competition has dealt a blow to the Blues’ chances of keeping Mount.

Man United are offering Champions League football but are not the only club interested in him.

However, he is open to the move and an agreement can be sealed if both clubs can reach a compromise.

Mount played a crucial role when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021, weighing in with two goals and two assists in 11 appearances.

His superb through ball led to Kai Havertz scoring the only goal and winner against Manchester City in the final of Europe’s elite competition.

Mount also created more chances (3) than the entire Man City side (2) in the game, and Man United could do with such a midfielder.

He has bagged 33 goals and 37 assists in 195 games for Chelsea and will be a good fit for the Red Devils.
