Manchester United survive Newport scare to advance

Scorers: Morris 36â€Č, Evans 47â€Č; Bruno Fernandes 7â€Č, Mainoo 13â€Č, Antony 68â€Č, HĂžjlund 90+4â€Č

Manchester United are through to the fifth round despite at one point squandering a 2-0 lead away at League Two side Newport County,.

The visitors made the ideal start at Rodney Parade, when Alejandro Garnacho found Bruno Fernandes with a cut-back, and the captain lashed low past the goalkeeper for 1-0.

It was soon 2-0 and youngster Kobbie Mainoo was the scorer, finishing excellently from Diogo Dalot’s assist for his first senior United goal.

A few minutes later it was close to being 3-0, but a great effort from Antony rattled the crossbar.

Before the first half was out, Newport gave themselves a fighting chance in stunning fashion, when Bryn Morris fired past United debutant Altay Bayındır with a stunning 25-yard half-volley which rattled the post on its way in.

And right at the start of the second half, the fourth-tier outfit completed a stunning comeback, when Adam Lewis’s cross was turned in by Will Evans for 2-2.

Newport smelled blood but it was United who struck again, when Luke Shaw’s excellent curling effort came back off the post, and Antony was in position to finish the rebound for his first goal of the season.

The match was temporarily stopped in the 82nd-minute while a supporter received medical attention in the stands.

Nine minutes was added on at the end of the 90, but United soon put the result beyond doubt when Rasmus HĂžjlund lashed in after a goalmouth scramble for 4-2.

Erik ten Hag’s side will now place Bristol City or Nottingham Forest away from home in the next round.

Klopp’s quadruple quest continues

Scorers: Jones 16â€Č NĂșñez 28â€Č, Jota 53â€Č, Van Dijk 63â€Č, Gravenberch 90+5â€Č; Gibson 22â€Č, Sainz 69â€Č

JĂŒrgen Klopp’s Liverpool farewell tour began with a comfortable win over Norwich City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Klopp’s team were dominant in the opening 10 minutes against a Norwich side who could barely get out of their own penalty box, with Darwin NĂșñez only denied the opener by the upright from a fierce effort from distance.

It didn’t long after that for their resistance to be broken when Curtis Jones steered in a header at the back post but within five minutes, Ben Gibson headed in from a corner at the other end for an equaliser against the run of play.

However, within another five minutes, Liverpool were back in the lead when NĂșƄez found the corner after the Canaries were caught cold and exposed at the back.

A goal-line clearance then denied Ryan Gravenberch a third before half-time but it did arrive shortly after half-time as Norwich’s earlier goal hero turned villain when his miscued header was pounced upon by Diogo Jota to volley home.

Shortly after the hour mark, substitute Virgil van Dijk came on to make it four with a towering header from a corner before the Canaries pulled one back through a brilliant curling 25-yarder from Borja Sainz shortly after he entered the fray.

Liverpool had the final say when Gravenberch headed home from Conor Bradley’s volleyed cross and they will face either Watford or Southampton in the next round after a late equaliser in that fixture forced a replay.

Saints rescue replay at the death

Scorers: Martins 6â€Č; Armstrong 89â€Č

Stuart Armstrong scored a last minute leveller to keep Southampton in the FA Cup and secure a home replay against Watford following a draw at Vicarage Road.

Watford took an early lead through Matheus Martins, who fired home from a free-kick that caught the Saints out at the front post.

The Brazilian came close to his second inside the final 20 minutes of play but saw his effort strike the post.

And just when the Hornets seemed set for victory, Armstrong wrongfooted everyone with a last minute equaliser which keeps his side alive in the tournament for a while longer.

Wolves advance after ugly derby scenes

Scorers: Neto 38â€Č, Cunha 78â€Č

Wolves booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a win over West Bromwich Albion in a game that was overshadowed by ugly clashes between rival supporters.

A tense opening half, heavy on derby action, was lit up by a moment of brilliance seven minutes before the break when Neto cut in off the right flank and drilled low into the corner with his left foot to silence the Hawthorns.

The Baggies found clearcut avenues to an equaliser difficult to come by before the game was finally put beyond their grasp in the closing stages when Matheus Cunha was picked out with a long ball over the top and he kept a cool head to finish at the near post.

But that goal inadvertently led to unsavoury scenes in the stands, with reports that a sizeable contingent of Wolves fans in the home end led to the start of some violent fights that spilled onto the field and led to the suspension of the game for 25 minutes.

When things eventually resumed, no further action, on or off the field, followed as Gary O’Neil’s men advanced.
