Manchester United splashed the cash over the most recent summer transfer window, with Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo all completing high-profile moves to the Old Trafford club.

United’s pursuit of Sancho lasted nearly two years whilst moves for Varane and Ronaldo were more straightforward. The former Real Madrid pair wrapped up a summer of strong business by United but there were suggestions of more.

Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier was heavily linked with a move to United but a transfer never materialised. The 31-year-old ended up staying at the Spanish outfit after helping them to their first domestic league title since 2014.

United’s interest in Trippier was said to have hinged on outgoings at the club, with some reports even claiming that the former Tottenham right-back was expecting a move to happen towards the end of the window.

He has now confirmed that he wishes to make a return to the Premier League as he embarks on his third full season in the Spanish capital.

“I know what I came here to do and I have done it,” Trippier told the Daily Mail. “I came here to try to achieve great things and I’d won the league. I just tried to take it all in.

“I would love to play in the Premier League again,” he added.

Whether a move for Trippier is revived by Manchester United remains to be seen but with just under two years left on his contract and on the wrong side of 30, it’s hard to see the club make a big investment in the England international.
