Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called on the club to make more signings this summer.
United drew 2-2 with Everton in the final game of the Premier League Summer Series in the USA. The Reds will now return to Old Trafford to face Fiorentina in their final pre-season match, before hosting Arsenal in the opening weekend of the season.
Speaking to NBC after the game, United’s captain felt that improvements are still needed at the club.
“It was positive, obviously it was also positive to be together,” Fernandes reflected. “To create a bond between the players, getting to the way we want to play, involving the new players.
“Obviously we didn’t want to finish in this way. I think our performance wasn’t the best, off the ball I think we were a little bit lazy today. We have to avoid that.”
On United’s current position, he continued: “It’s improving, it is not in the place it has to be obviously.
“I don’t want to take a dig at anyone, I think the club is doing the best it can with the financial situation. But it was crystal clear that we needed more competition.
“For the players that were here, we needed more quality, to get everyone to step up a little bit more. I think that is what the club is trying to do and the manager.
“Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”
Boss Ruben Amorim, however, insists that there is competition for places: “A team can always improve with more players. But we have players to make that competition.
“We need to improve as a team, we have potential to improve with our players. I’m really happy with the squad.”
The Reds’ transfer activity is likely not concluded yet though, with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko among the players they are keen on.
The club are also hoping to offload some players ahead of the new season. Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia were all left out of the pre-season tour squad and could depart.
