Manchester United should look at signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer to provide competition to Rasmus Hojlund.

The Red Devils currently have Hojlund as their undisputed starter up front, but the Dane has had no competition whatsoever with Anthony Martial sidelined.

The Frenchman has been out of action since January with a groin surgery and he may have played his final game for the club with his contract expiring on June 30.

United should look to replace him with Toney, who could be prised away from the Bees for £40-50 million as he enters the last year of his contract.

Toney would be a perfect candidate to support Hojlund

Martial has been hugely disappointing for United under manager Erik ten Hag. He scored some crucial goals last season but missed around 29 games with injuries.

He has gone through a similar pattern this term and looks set to be released at the end of June.

Toney would be an ideal replacement in the squad, considering he has a strong physical and aerial presence. He also works hard for the team on and off the ball.

Toney has had a drop off with four goals this term after scoring 21 goals last season, but this was partly due to his eight-month break after a betting ban.

The 28-year-old could return to his best with a full pre-season. With better creative players around him at United, he should be among the goals next term.

Hojlund will undoubtedly continue as the main striker, but his workload needs to be managed. He was in brilliant form earlier this year before sustaining a muscle injury.

The Dane has struggled to recapture his scoring touch on his return. United need to handle him with caution.

Toney would ease some of the burden on Hojlund, who was described as an ‘exceptional talent‘ by Harry Maguire in February.
