Manchester United remain hopeful over the signing of Frenkie de Jong, with talks set to continue with Barcelona this week as the two clubs look to agree a fee.

De Jong is new United manager Erik ten Hag's number one transfer target ahead of his maiden season at Old Trafford, and United have been working on the deal for De Jong in the weeks since his appointment.

90min understands United are prepared to increase their offer to Barcelona to around €70m, with add ons taking the proposal to around €80m to tempt the Catalans into a sale. Barcelona's asking price is around €85m, but United are hopeful that the new bid will be enough to close the transfer.

De Jong has publicly declared he is happy to stay at Barcelona, but the club are still looking to sell the former Ajax midfielder this summer to trim their wage bill and allow them to register new signings.

United have agreed to pay De Jong a similar wage packet to what he currently earns at Barcelona, and personal terms will not be a problem once a fee can be agreed. United are buoyed by the fact that they know the player would like to join them, as Ten Hag has reaffirmed behind the scenes in recent days.

If the deal goes ahead, De Jong would become one of United's highest earning players, only beneath Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea in the club's wage structure and earning around £350,000-a-week.

United have yet to confirm any incomings this summer, though are hoping to seal De Jong's transfer soon before moving on to other targets.

The club are hopeful out of contract Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen will join despite strong interest from Tottenham, while they also hold interest in Ajax forward Antony and defender Jurrien Timber - though the latter is leaning towards staying with the Dutch champions ahead of the World Cup in November.

Villarreal's Pau Torres is among United's other targets, while another Ajax defender, Lisandro Martinez, is also of interest.
