Manchester United began the Erik ten Hag era with a comprehensive victory over rivals Liverpool at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium on Tuesday.
Scorers: Sancho 12′, Fred 30′, Martial 33′, Pellestri 77′
The game began in end-to-end fashion and it was United who struck first, when Jadon Sancho whipped a shot into the bottom corner of Alisson’s net after Liverpool had been unable to clear their lines.
Liverpool new boy Fabio Carvalho then hit the post, before United went 2-0 up, with Fred brilliantly chipping over Alisson from 20 yards out.
Jürgen Klopp then made a raft of substitutions after half an hour, only for Anthony Martial to make it 3-0 to United with a lovely dinked finish of his own.
United new boy Tyrell Malacia entered the fray for his debut at half-time, before Liverpool brought on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcântara and record signing Darwin Núñez for his first outing early in the second half.
Núñez tested United substitute goalkeeper Tom Heaton with a decent effort from a tight angle after 70 minutes, but United soon increased their lead when Facundo Pellistri finished off a brilliant counter-attack sparked by Eric Bailly and involving Amad Diallo.
Salah then went close to pulling one back in the dying minutes when his curling effort rattled the post, and Núñez could only fire the rebound over.
Next up, United face Melbourne Victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, while Liverpool take on Crystal Palace in Singapore.
