Manchester United have dropped plans to relocate from their Carrington training complex.
The Sun says United bosses are believed to have looked into moving to the vast Tatton Estate in Cheshire, and building a £200million state-of-the-art base.
Yet the cost of buying the land alone was so prohibitive that they swiftly ditched the idea and are likely to focus on revamping their current site instead.
United had considered a switch as their current AON base has fallen behind the deluxe facilities enjoyed by rivals City, Tottenham and Liverpool.
The club have appointed Mags Mernagh as Programme Director for Carrington development.
Staff were informed by e-mail last week that she will be 'responsible for delivering the vision and plan for a world-class training ground redevelopment.'
Mernagh previously worked at Leicester City and was instrumental in delivering their £130m training ground.
A United insider revealed: “The club had looked at moving to Tatton but received word that it would cost tens of millions of pounds before a spade was even in the ground.
“Carrington needs to deliver for the men's, women's and Academy teams at all levels and the bosses know it will take big money to do it right."
United moved to Carrington from their old training ground at The Cliff two decades ago, but there are concerns within the club that it is no longer big enough.
