Man Utd eye Fabian Ruiz in ambitious summer rebuild

Manchester United have set their sights on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz as they continue to reshape the squad under Ruben Amorim, with the Spaniard emerging as a marquee target in what is shaping up to be a bold recruitment drive.

Ruiz targeted for midfield leadership

United’s recruitment team have been impressed by Ruiz’s contribution to PSG’s historic treble-winning season. The 29-year-old was central to the French club’s midfield, featuring in 58 matches and playing a pivotal role in their first-ever Champions League triumph, alongside Ligue 1 and French Cup success.

Ruiz, under contract until June 2027, has yet to enter discussions over a renewal with PSG. That uncertainty has alerted suitors across Europe and beyond, including Man Utd and Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, who are reportedly prepared to offer a significant financial package to lure him to the Middle East.

But United believe Ruiz could offer both immediate quality and tactical maturity to Amorim’s midfield – a department where upgrades are seen as essential if the club are to close the gap to Premier League title contenders.

Garnacho among potential high-profile exits

Progress on incoming deals, however, is expected to hinge on outgoings. United are actively exploring the market for potential sales, with the futures of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho all under scrutiny. While Garnacho is still seen by some within the club as a long-term asset, sources suggest that sizeable offers would be considered amid efforts to generate funds for reinforcements.

This recalibration could unlock movement on several fronts, with Amorim also keen to address the central midfield and centre-forward roles. Goalkeeper is another area being evaluated, but focus remains on creative and controlling midfield profiles like Ruiz and Atalanta’s Ederson.

Mbeumo deal still in negotiation

United’s most advanced talks are with Brentford for winger Bryan Mbeumo. The club have already made two bids – both rejected – with Brentford holding out for a fee exceeding the £62.5 million spent on Matheus Cunha, who joined from Wolves earlier this window.

There is cautious optimism at Old Trafford that an agreement will eventually be reached. United have even pencilled in a provisional medical for the Cameroon international, indicating confidence that personal terms will not be a stumbling block.

Ruiz move depends on PSG stance

While admiration for Ruiz is strong, prising him away from PSG will be anything but straightforward. Manager Luis Enrique is understood to consider Ruiz a cornerstone of his system, and internal discussions are expected in Paris about initiating new contract talks.

“Luis Enrique views Ruiz as a vital player and will surely tell PSG chiefs to enter contract talks with his agent soon.”

Any move would therefore require United to submit a compelling proposal both to the player and the Ligue 1 champions, who would demand a significant fee for one of their midfield lynchpins.

At this stage, Ruiz represents an ambitious – and potentially expensive – pursuit. Should United show upward momentum under Amorim in the early months of the new season, the appeal of Old Trafford could yet tilt the situation in their favour.

In the meantime, Atalanta’s Ederson remains a more realistic midfield target. “TEAMtalk revealed on May 12 that Amorim has approved the signing of Ederson, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton another midfielder being tracked.”

Whether United can turn their interest in Ruiz into a tangible deal will depend on both PSG’s willingness to engage and United’s ability to raise funds through sales. What’s clear is that United are operating with intent, seeking not just squad depth but game-changing talent to propel them back into elite contention.
