Manchester United released their full-year financial results earlier this week, revealing that the club lost a staggering £2 million every single week during the 2021/22 campaign.

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who delved into the Old Trafford’s club’s recently-released accounts for the year to 30 June 2022.

One factor behind that dizzying deficit is the club’s substantial overall weekly wage bill, which was so high that it has shattered a Premier League record.

Per the Mail, United had paid salaries totalling £384.2m last season, surpassing Manchester City’s previous high of £354.6m.

For clarity, those figures cover the salaries of everyone at the club and not just playing staff, although the majority did end up in the pockets of players.

Who are Manchester United’s highest earners?

The majority of that figure, naturally, is taken up by player wages. Cristiano Ronaldo is the club’s highest earner currently, raking in just over £500,000 every seven days.

Goalkeeper David de Gea pulls down a tidy £375,000-per-week, while Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane (both new arrivals last summer) each earn more than £300,000-per-week.

The Red Devils are a club with massive commercial appeal. However, failing to qualify for the Champions League this season has hit their finances hard.

De Gea future in doubt over Man Utd’s huge wage bill

The sobering reality of how much cash United are losing each and every week has reportedly left bosses weighing up whether to extend 32-year-old De Gea’s bumper deal by a further year, according to The Telegraph.

Everton and England shot-stopper Jordan Pickford is believed to be on United’s radar as a younger (and cheaper) replacement, per the report.

After signing the likes of Antony, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez during the summer transfer window, United’s financial commitments have only grown in recent months.

With that in mind, we decided to take a look at just how much United will be laying out on wages in the 2022/23 season, together with the totals for the other nine biggest spending clubs.

Figures have been taken via

10. Crystal Palace £59.18m (per Capology)

9. Newcastle United: £59.52m

8. Aston Villa: £65.26m

7. Leicester City: £65.31m

6. Tottenham: £85.27m

5. Arsenal: £85.58m

4. Manchester City: £144.18m

3. Liverpool: £153.48m

2. Chelsea: £158.60m

1. Manchester United: £212.78m

Man Utd’s hefty compensation bill after Solskjaer and Rangnick departures

In addition to a record-setting wage bill, United’s accounts also revealed that compensation costs of £24.7m were incurred last season after the club decided to part company with Solskjaer and abandon their ill-fated plan to keep Rangnick at the club in a consultancy role.

The club might need to get their wage bill under control, but those compensation payments alone would almost have covered Ronaldo’s salary for a full year!
