Manchester United could consider moving for Brentford striker Ivan Toney if the player impresses for England during the international break, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag oversaw a busy summer window at Old Trafford but failed to strengthen his striking options, so the club will likely continue monitoring targets.

What is the latest on Toney?

The 26-year-old has made a rapid start to the 2022-23 campaign and sits on a record of five goals and two assists from the opening seven Premier League games.

That form has now been rewarded by England manager Gareth Southgate, who called Toney up to his latest squad ahead of Nations League clashes with Italy and Germany.

After the news, Brentford manager Thomas Frank revealed he was ‘very pleased’ for his star striker and that Southgate allowed him to break the news to Toney.

Manchester United were among the sides reportedly eyeing a move for the 144-goal striker, with the Red Devils monitoring Toney ‘all summer’.

Chelsea were also understood to be interested but completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead.

However, Jones has previously said that it would likely take a bid of close to £50 million to tempt the west London outfit into a sale.

What has Jones said on United’s interest?

The journalist understands that Ten Hag’s side could be further tempted to push ahead with a move for Toney if he impresses while on England duty.

He says that the forward has improved every season and, for that reason, will not come cheap to any suitor.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s not a signing that is going to strike fear into any of Europe’s elite but that does not mean he wouldn’t be a good fit. Toney is improving every season and if he makes a mark while with the England squad it becomes more feasible a club like United genuinely might consider him. He won’t be cheap though.”

Why are United considering a deal?

This summer saw Cristiano Ronaldo inform the club that he wanted to leave should a suitable offer come in for him.

The 37-year-old only returned to Old Trafford a year ago but is eager to continue plying his trade in the Champions League, a competition United failed to qualify for last term.

Other options were considered in the summer as a result, including Aubameyang, Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen.
