He told the Manchester Evening News: "It's a proud moment and a big privilege to be doing this job," Svidersky says in fluent English. "I am thankful for all the staff and the coach for picking me all the way in the pre-season.

"The job comes with lots of responsibilities as well. I have to go by example and lead the boys and show the qualities that I deserve the armband.

"I can speak four [languages] I would say, Greek as well. It's been difficult [during the pandemic]. All the foreign boys can agree that we all miss our families, the transition to a different culture was difficult.

"But again the club, the boys and all the staff helped us adapt so much. Welcomed us like United are known for. They made it easy for us. Now we are happy, especially after today. Looking forward to more competition, challenges."
